Structures

As one of the newer teams to EWB@MSU, the Structures team focuses on building education facilities to enrich the opportunities of students in Khwisero, Kenya. Our goal is to provide the resources necessary for the success of the students through our ongoing partnership with M-Koko.

So far, our structures team has produced a library for the Emwaniro school system. After extensive discussions with M-Koko, EWB@MSU decided to assess these schools for a library because M-Koko has expressed major concerns for the lack of learning spaces and book storage at the schools in the Khwisero region. Since passing new policies that encourage students to continue school beyond the primary level by the Kenyan government, many of the schools in this region did not have sufficient learning areas. The decision for a library came from the opportunities this sort of building presented; a library offered space to introduce technology such as computers and allowed secure storage of technology and textbooks

After the success of our first project, EWB@MSU is now working on our second structures project: a chemistry lab for Mushikongolo Junior Secondary School. The decision to focus on constructing a chemistry lab for a junior secondary school was guided by M-Koko’s extensive knowledge of the community’s needs and priorities. Through ongoing engagement, M-Koko identified the lack of adequate science education facilities. Due to a rearrangement of grades in the Khwisero school systems, access to science labs has become a significant barrier to student success and long-term opportunities. Science labs are a required piece of the curriculum, forcing students to walk several kilometers to the nearest lab. By addressing this gap, the project aims to empower students with practical science education, fostering their academic growth and future career possibilities.

We are excited to continue exploring and growing our partnership with M-Koko, and work with them to implement much needed education facilities.
